Request or Question
I have been contacted by a concerned parent in Scotland whose child attends a small primary school. Yesterday, 11th November, what the child (age 7) referred to as an 'Isolation Box' was put around this child so that they would concentrate on set work. The local authority is Angus. Is this strategy being used in Scottish schools? If so could you explain the reasoning behind it?
If it is being used what consideration has been done for the Rights of the Child and mental wellbeing?
If it is not being used what assurances can you give that indeed it is not?
If it is not being used - where would a young child get the term 'Isolation Box' from if not from the school?
Response
Scottish Borders Council do not recognise the term isolation box in Scottish Borders Council however we do have very clear guidance for our schools on the acceptable use of seclusion and restraint.
