Case study - Amy Simpson Early Years Childcare MA
Why did you choose to do a modern apprenticeship?
"This apprenticeship in Children and Young people was the perfect opportunity to allow me a foot in the door to the career I have always wanted to do. I have always been keen to work with children and considered going to University to do Primary Education, however University was not the right option for me at this time and therefore I went on to get work experience through an apprenticeship in Social Services. This offered me so many valuable opportunities and allowed me to gain confidence in the world of work. I then went on to complete an apprenticeship in Children and Young people. This was the perfect way for me to gain my qualification alongside gaining relevant work experience. I am so glad I chose this route."
What advice would you give to someone considering a modern apprenticeship?
"My advice to anybody who is considering an apprenticeship is to go for it. There is such a vast amount of opportunities and paths it can lead to. Modern apprenticeships set you up perfectly by giving you the important qualification alongside gaining valuable work experience. The support that I got from both Scottish Borders Council and Borders College was fabulous. I thoroughly enjoyed both of my apprenticeships and would recommend it to anyone who is considering it."
Where do you see yourself in five years?
"I am currently working towards a degree which will enable me to go down several education based routes. In 5 years time I hope to still have a career working with children and progressing up the career ladder."
How did COVID-19 affect your modern apprenticeship?
"COVID-19 did not impact on my apprenticeship massively as I was mostly completed, however my assessor and school were super supportive and flexible around how to approach things."
