Tweeddale Citizen of the Year Award 2021 nomination period extended

Published: 8th February 2022

The nomination period for Tweeddale Citizen of the Year for 2021 has been extended to 22 February to allow local residents more time to submit their suggestions for the prestigious accolade

The Award is a chance to recognise members of the local community who have gone above and beyond within the past year, either by contributing to the honour and welfare of the area, playing an integral part in the life of Tweeddale or in some other way enhancing its reputation.

A Special Selection Committee will meet in March to consider the presentation of the 2021 award.

Since the initiative was introduced in 1991, a wide selection of winners have received the award, including ‘High Street Hero’ Denise Hanks from Walkerburn.

Denise was the recipient of the 2020 award due to her significant contribution to community groups and ensuring that no members of the community are without food and also by collecting and redistributing surplus food from local supermarkets to the community. Her nomination was made by the Walkerburn and District Community Council and also had widespread support from local residents and fellow committee members.

Sir Hew Strachan, The Lord-Lieutenant for the area of Tweeddale

“The competition to be selected as the Tweeddale Citizen of the Year allows us to recognise one of the many committed individuals who have made major contributions to their communities over the course of the preceding year."

“We are sure that there are worthy candidates for 2021 - and not just those who have rallied to help during the Covid pandemic. But we rely on your nominations. If you know of somebody whose contribution you particularly admire, please put their name forward.”
