Yellow weather warning for snow as Storm Eunice to hit region

Published: 17th February 2022

The Met Office has updated the yellow weather warning for Friday, with it now only forecasting snow.

Yellow warning

The warning is still valid from 3am until 6pm tomorrow and covers the majority of the Borders, with only areas east of around Duns and Coldstream lying outwith the warning area.

Some places within the warning area are expected to see around 5cm of snow at low levels. Areas over 150m could see 5-10cm, and more than 10cm is possible on the highest routes.

Be prepared

Whilst this is normal winter weather, residents are asked to be prepared for the conditions as strong winds at the same time may lead to very poor visibility, blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow.

Alongside a range of partners we are monitoring the forecast closely and winter maintenance operations will take place this afternoon and this evening, with overnight cover in place to treat and clear depot routes. Additional resources are on standby to provide snow clearance support from 4am on Friday.

Further warnings

A further weather front is expected to move in on Sunday which could bring with it very strong winds. It is likely that the Met Office will issue a further weather warning for this period tomorrow.

Updates will be provided by us through the free emergency messaging service SB Alert and through our website.
