Multiply grant funding awarded to local groups to improve adult numeracy skills

Published: 23rd November 2023

A new fund to support organisations and groups to deliver activities or courses that will improve adults’ understanding and use of maths in their daily lives, has now awarded funding to successful applicants

Multiply is a UK Government funded programme, launched as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), which aims to help transform the lives of adults by improving their numeracy skills.

Organisations and groups from across the Scottish Borders were invited to apply to Multiply for up to £20,000 to put towards the cost of developing new activities or courses that would allow adults to enhance their numeracy skills.

These activities or courses could allow adults to:

  • increase their confidence with numbers
  • upskill in order to access a certain job/career
  • increase their numeracy skills to help their children/grandchildren
  • use numeracy to better manage their money

Sucessful applicants

A total of eight organisations and groups have been successful in their application for funding. These are:

  • Working Together, Brothers of Charity
  • Money Advice Scotland
  • Where’s the One?
  • Links, Outside the Box Development Support
  • Cameron Hall
  • Big Wild Life
  • First Class Learning Consultancy

Once the courses and activities are established, they will either be opened up to anyone resident in the Borders looking to increase their confidence in using maths in their daily life or made available through organisations who will be working with groups already identified.

Information about the funded courses currently available and how to register can be found online.

Councillor Leagh Douglas, Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning

“Feeling confident with numbers helps in all aspects of life, from budgeting to cooking to home improvement projects, let alone in an education or workplace setting.

“Many people do feel nervous when it comes to numbers, and Multiply aims to address this issue.  It is really encouraging to see such a variety of organisations and groups receive grant funding and we would encourage all individuals from across the region to take a look at the courses available and to take that first step towards increasing their confidence with numbers”.
