Children & Young People’s Commissioner for Scotland visits Scottish Borders

Published: 29th November 2023

Children’s Commissioner Nicola Killean visited Burgh Primary School in Galashiels yesterday to launch a new illustrated book in Scots on human rights for very young children.

The book, aimed at children aged up to five and beautifully illustrated by Corinna Campbell, from Inverness, takes young children on a journey to discover rights like having a safe home, the right to be healthy, to learn, and to play.

The Commissioner met with staff from Burgh Primary School, Councillor Leagh Douglas, Executive Member for Education & Lifelong Learning and the Listening & Learning Ambassadors (LaLA) group, Primary 1’s and nursery-aged children who she read passages to and took part in activities aligned with children's rights.

Councillor Leagh Douglas, Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said:

“Burgh Primary School was thrilled to host a special visit from the Children’s Commissioner, Nicola Killean and the launch of 'Let’s Explore Oor Richts’.  I was delighted to be part of it and particularly impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm of the children in the LaLA Group, with representatives from children in P2 to P7”.

Emma Armstrong, Burgh PS Depute Head, said:

“Having the Children’s Commissioner at Burgh Primary School for the book launch was a very special occasion, the event is particularly significant as Burgh has actively championed Article 12, emphasising the crucial right of children to have a voice which is heard.

“This initiative aligns seamlessly with the schools ongoing commitment to promoting and upholding the rights of children throughout our school community”.
