Convener, Councillor Watson McAteer, opened Council by welcoming a representative from the Selkirk Merchant Company to receive an artefact which has been in our possession
The short ceremony at the beginning of Council, on 24 October, marked the return of the Treasure’s chain to the Selkirk Merchant Company for safe keeping. It’s believed the chain was originally presented to the Royal Burgh of Selkirk by Selkirk Merchants Company in 1963.
Master Falconer Grieve received the chain on behalf of the Selkirk Merchant Company.
Councillor Watson McAteer, Convener
“The Merchant Company is a force of good entering its fourth century and remains very active focussed on upholding the customs and traditions of the fine auld toon of Selkirk.
"Returning the Chain will I’m sure add to these traditions and on behalf of the Council I am delighted to be handing it over this morning to Falconer Grieve.”
