Having a family member in prison or facing a prison sentence can affect families in a number of ways. Family support can be vital throughout the sentence and on release.
Advice and services for families
Families Outside is an independent organisation that provides support to families affected by imprisonment in Scotland. They can provide help with:
- information about prison
- your emotions and feelings: coping, shame, isolation
- talking to your child/children
- family relations and support networks
- housing, income, finance and benefits
- access to community support and services
- visiting and maintaining contact
- a concern for someone in prison
- preparations for release
Their service is confidential and non-judgemental. It is available throughout Scotland and includes:
- provision of support, which can either be face-to-face, online or over the phone
- emotional support and help with practical issues
- linking you with local specialist services
- helping you take more control of your situation

Your questions about release
If you have a family member who is being released on licence or statutory order you may be visited by a criminal justice social worker, who can answer any questions you may have.
