Updates - Bird Flu
Avian influenza (bird flu) has been confirmed in Scottish coastal areas, including the Scottish Borders. We are working with partner agencies following the reports of dead seabirds.
Please follow the guidance below if you should come across a dead or sick bird and follow the general guidance around keeping safe:
- Don't pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds
- Keep pets/dogs away from any dead or sick birds
- Don't feed wild waterfowl
- Don't touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings
- If you keep poultry or other birds, wash your hands and clean and disinfect your footwear before tending to your birds.
Sightings of dead birds in Scottish Border coastal areas should be reported to the Council via the following email advice@scotborders.gov.uk include the number of dead birds and where they were seen, giving the best description of the location as possible. Using the what3words App will give an accurate location.
Any dead wild waterfowl should also be reported to DEFRA's hotline 0345 933 5577. On finding a live but ailing bird call SSPCA 0300 0999 999.
