Mobile CCTV deployment
As part of our commitment to public safety, the Safer Communities team is co-ordinating the deployment of four mobile CCTV cameras across the Borders.
Where will the cameras be located?
Proposed locations for camera deployment come from a variety of sources.
Each request is subject to an assessment to ensure that it necessary, justifiable and proportionate to achieving the legitimate aim of prevention and detection of crime and antisocial behaviour. A site visit is also undertaken.
Recommendations are brought to the monthly Council-funded Police Community Action Team Oversight Group meeting for overall approval. The meeting is attended by elected members, ensuring both geographic and political representation.
At all stages of the process, accurate record keeping is maintained.
Will the cameras be hidden?
No, the cameras are positioned in an overt way with appropriate signage on display in relevant public areas.
How long will a camera remain in each location?
Whilst a camera is being deployed, it is monitored regularly for continued activity. An assessment is then made as to the duration of the deployment.
Once the purpose of the deployment has been achieved, the camera is withdrawn and moved to another location.
What happens if antisocial or criminal activity is recorded?
You can find out more about how we will use any information that is recorded in the Public Space Mobile CCTV Privacy Notice.
Police Scotland can make a formal request for access to the images. Information not required will be redacted.
What happens to the images?
No images are stored in the cameras and any that are downloaded for use are deleted after a pre-set period of 30 days, unless it is determined necessary to retain them for a longer period. Should Police Scotland require access to any images this is done through a formal disclosure request.
