Road works and closures

Surface Dressing

2024 Surface dressing programme

Surface dressing works are due to start week commencing 3 June and are expected to last 4-6 weeks depending on weather conditions. The process involves spraying the carriageway with a bitumen binder followed by a layer of stone chippings which are compacted by mechanical roller. The carriageway is then swept within 24 hours of this of the process, however, loose chippings will be present on the site for a number of weeks until the chippings have been fully embedded into the surface. Sites will continue to be swept as necessary over this period with 20mph speed limit signs remaining in place until the final sweep has been completed.

Due to the available road widths and to comply with health and safety legislation, all sites will be carried out under a full road closure.  Every effort will be made to maintain access for residents as much as possible, however, access to individual properties will be restricted for short periods until the works have passed.

If you have any specific access requirements or questions regarding these works please e-mail placeroadsasset@scotborders.gov.uk  or call 0300 100 1800 and request to speak to either Paul Matthewson, Jason Mains or Keith Millar. Alternatively please speak to staff on site who will usually be able to accommodate your needs.

The surface dressing programme is as follows:

  • Monday 1 July - A7 Gala to Buckholm (3 days)
  • Thursday 4 July - No works due to election
  • Friday 5 July - A7 Stow
  • Monday 8 July - A707 Old Toll Road
  • Tuesday 9 July - A72 Edston

*Please note that Surface dressing operations are wholly dependant on suitable weather conditions. Should we encounter either very warm or wet conditions, works will be postponed with the programme adjusted to suit.
