When did the new regulations come into effect?
The regulations came into effect in Scotland on 1st January 2024 however SEPA allowed time to ensure we have procedures in place to meet these regulations.
Why can't I cut up my sofa or chair before taking it for disposal?
Due to the risk of textiles or foam containing Persistent Organic Pollutants entering the environment you must ensure that any upholstered domestic seating that has incurred damage, been torn or broken is covered to prevent release of fibres. e.g. a tear can be covered using tape, broken cushion can be placed within a sealed bag.
Will I always have to book upholstered domestic seating from my house into the CRC site?
At the moment, yes, a booking will be required. Our processes at the CRC sites are frequently reviewed and updated. Any changes to the current system will be updated on the website.
Can I put upholstered domestic seating into my kerbside bin?
As the regulation requires any upholstered domestic seating is kept separate from all other waste where possible, do not dispose of your unwanted upholstered domestic seating items in your kerbside residual or recycling bins.
How is Scottish Borders Council dealing with WUDS containing POPs?
All upholstered domestic seating is transported to a approved facility where the material is processed in accordance with the SEPA Guidance.

Why is Easter Langlee the only Waste Transfer Station that can accept upholstered domestic seating?
This is because it is the only site that has adequate dust suppression and storage to comply with the regulations.
I’m a current CRC trade access permit holder, can I get a refund because I now have to come to the Waste Transfer Station?
Yes, you are eligible for a refund. Contact tradewaste@scotborders.gov.uk to get refund on tickets purchased from 17 May 2024 - 15th July 2024.
